Steve Avory – Academy Manager at Charlton Athletic Football Club

Charlton Athletic Academy Manager – Steve Avory – shares a fabulous insight into his journey through sport as a player, PE teacher coach and senior Academy Leader, as well as some of the challenges and pressures he faces running a successful football academy.

 

We covered a variety of topics including following your passion, dreams and interest; The fact it takes time to have a real influence on young players and develop talent; Passing his A License and this being a defining moment in his career and the importance of purposefully practising what you do.

To hear from such an experienced and humble practitioner who rose to success through determination and a desire to continually learn and who has identified and developed some great talent was a real privilege – take a listen as there is a little something in this for players and parents, teachers, coaches and leaders.

  • From NE Derbyshire ( born in Chesterfield )
  • Teacher Training College 1976 – 79
  • Schoolteacher in Bexley, Kent and Crawley, Sussex. 1979 – 2000. PE Teacher
  • Charlton Athletic Academy, Jan 2001 – present, Assistant Academy Manager, Head of Coaching, Academy Manager ( in 2 spells totalling 9 years )

 

       Notable career achievements / milestones :

  • ‘A’ Licence Coach since 1985
  • Team Manager England Schools FA Under 15, 1991- 94.
  • Assistant Manager / Coach England ‘ C ‘ Team ( Semi Pro ) 2003 – 09 ( we didn’t talk on this one. Never mind )
  • Premier League Eamonn Dolan Award 2018. Recognition Award for services to Youth Development.
